A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
